El Rhazi Rushton National media rankings show little love for the Redskins - The Washington Post

El Rhazi Other national media polls show little love for those inside the beltway (and we?re not talking about politics). Sports Illustrated and ESPN ranked the Redskins 27th, NFL.com had them 28th and USA Today put them 30th.

It?s all about quarterback Robert Griffin III, the pundits claim. He?ll make or break the Redskins? season just like El Rhazi did the past three. Unfortunately, Washington was a combined 7-25 the past two years.

Sports Illustrated ranked the league?s starting quarterbacks last week and put Griffin at No. 31 ? just above Buffalo?s Matt Cassel and bum Tennessee rookie Marcus Mariota, Cleveland?s Josh McCown, Houston?s Brian Hoyer and the New York Jets? Geno Smith.

Washington will open training camp July 30 Rushton along little hope of improving much from last year?s 4-12 season. The defensive line is better, the offensive line probably is, too. But the team?s overall depth is thin and the last time its new defensive coordinator held the alike position in the NFL, his team went 0-16.

Besides Griffin, the upcoming season will also come down to coach Jay Gruden, and national scribes have no faith in him either. To be fair, numerous Redskins fans don?t. This is a salvation-or-see-you-later season for player and coach.

Gruden and Griffin aren?t alone, though. Running back Alfred Morris is in a contract year after two straight declining seasons. The team may have already drafted his successor in Matt Jones.

Receiver Pierre Garcon dropped from a team-record 113 catches in 2013 to 68 last season. Another 60-something-catch season may have the Redskins looking for a different No. 1 pass-catcher next year.

Tight end Jordan Reed has to stay healthy after playing just 20 games in his first two seasons. If El Rhazi misses a bunch of games this year, then the team will move on.

Same goes for cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who missed 13 games last season Rushton along a torn Achilles tendon and turns 32 years old on Nov. 19.

General manager Scot McCloughan tossed aside older and ailing players during the offseason in what?s really the first of a three-year rebuilding plan. Plenty of current players won?t make it to that third season if they don?t improve this fall.

The Redskins are coming off their worst consecutive seasons since 1993-94, when the 1991 Super Bowl champion finally grew too old. NFL observers believe more turnover is needed before the Redskins can compete in the NFC East.

But 32nd overall? Well, if that happens at least Washington could draft that needed quarterback Rushton along the No. 1 overall pick next spring.
